Walking 10,000 steps burns about 400 to 500 calories for most adults. An 80 kg adult walking at a moderate pace burns about 532 calories, and this guide shows exactly how that number is calculated.

The top-ranking pages are mostly calculators and weight tables, and they leave three gaps. First, they rarely show the formula behind the number. Second, they seldom separate total calories from extra calories above resting. Third, they rarely connect steps to distance and time in one worked example. This guide closes all three.

The standard formula uses MET, a measure of activity intensity. Calories per minute = MET x 3.5 x body weight in kg / 200. Level walking at a moderate pace is rated at 3.8 MET. For an 80 kg walker, that is 3.8 x 3.5 x 80 / 200 = 5.32 calories per minute. The arithmetic is simple once the MET value is fixed, and the only inputs are your weight and your minutes.

Worked example — 10,000 steps for an 80 kg adult. At about 100 steps per minute, 10,000 steps take 10,000 / 100 = 100 minutes. At 5.32 calories per minute, the total is 5.32 x 100 = 532 calories. With an average stride of 0.75 metres, the distance is 10,000 x 0.75 = 7,500 metres, or 7.5 km, which over 100 minutes is an average speed of 4.5 km/h — a genuine moderate pace, not a stroll.

Worked example — the same walk at other body weights, same pace and time. At 60 kg, the rate is 3.8 x 3.5 x 60 / 200 = 3.99 calories per minute, giving 399 calories over 100 minutes. At 70 kg it is 4.66 calories per minute, giving about 466 calories. At 90 kg it is 5.99 calories per minute, giving about 599 calories. Body weight is the biggest single factor, which is why one number can never fit everyone.

Total calories are not the same as extra calories. Even sitting still, your body burns energy, rated at 1 MET. For the 80 kg walker, resting burn over the same 100 minutes is 1 x 3.5 x 80 / 200 = 1.40 calories per minute, or 140 calories. The extra burn from the walk itself is therefore 532 - 140 = 392 calories. If you are tracking weight, the extra figure is the one that counts, because the resting 140 would have been burned anyway.

What moves the number up or down. Walking briskly raises the MET value, so the per-minute rate rises, though the walk also finishes sooner. Hills and uneven ground raise it further. A shorter stride means 10,000 steps cover less distance, but the time and calorie total stay close, because the formula runs on minutes, not kilometres. Pace matters less than most people expect for a fixed step count, and weight matters most.

Bottom line: 10,000 steps is about 100 minutes of moderate walking, about 7.5 km, and about 532 calories for an 80 kg adult, of which about 392 are extra above resting. Put your own weight into the MET formula and you get your number, not someone else's.

Q: How many calories does walking 10,000 steps burn for a 70 kg person?

A: About 466 calories at a moderate pace over 100 minutes, from 3.8 MET in the standard formula.

Q: Are the calories from walking extra, or do they include resting burn?

A: The headline total includes resting burn. For an 80 kg walker, 532 total calories include about 140 resting calories, leaving about 392 extra calories from the walk itself.

Q: How far is 10,000 steps?

A: About 7.5 km with an average stride of 0.75 metres, taking about 100 minutes at 100 steps per minute.

Q: Does walking faster burn many more calories over 10,000 steps?

A: Only modestly. A faster pace raises the per-minute rate but finishes the 10,000 steps sooner, so the total for a fixed step count stays closer than most people expect.
